At least 20 people were killed and 52 injured in a suicide attack on the Prophet Elias Church in the Dweila district of Damascus, according to Syrian security sources.

The Syrian Interior Ministry announced that the suicide bomber was a member of the Islamic State organization. According to the announcement, the perpetrator entered the church, opened fire, and detonated the explosive belt. A security source said that two men participated in the attack, including the suicide bomber.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sara has pledged to protect minorities in the country.

The French government condemned the attack and reiterated its commitment to a transition in Syria that would allow all Syrians to live in peace and security.

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the suicide bombing attack on the Greek Orthodox Church of Prophet Elias in Damascus. Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis will inform Greece's EU partners at the Foreign Affairs Council.
