The man detained as a 'person of interest' following the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island, USA, has been released. The attack resulted in the death of two students and injuries to nine others.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez had announced the detention of a man in his 20s. However, Mayor Brett Smiley and other officials later stated that the detained man would be released, and the investigation is 'heading in another direction.' Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha expressed confidence that the case would be resolved soon.

Authorities declined to comment on the reason for the detention but believe the man in a CCTV video is the suspect they are looking for. The shelter-in-place order for the campus and surrounding areas has been lifted.

The shooting, one of nearly 400 recorded this year in the USA, caused shock. The university canceled exams and classes until the end of the year. Seven injured are in stable condition, one in critical but stable, and one has been discharged.

The perpetrator fled after opening fire in a classroom. Authorities released a video of the suspect, dressed in black, near the building. Brown President Christina Paxson confirmed that the victims are mainly students.
