Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the arming of National Guard members patrolling the streets of Washington D.C., according to the Pentagon.

This measure escalates Trump's intervention in policing the U.S. capital, as nearly 2,000 National Guard members are already in Washington.

The soldiers will be allowed to carry weapons, but will not have the right to make arrests. They will be instructed to temporarily detain individuals, if necessary, and hand them over to police authorities as soon as possible.

Donald Trump visited military and police in Washington, stating that the operation to restore order will last 'some time'.

He claimed he received many calls from residents thanking him for his initiative to send troops.
