Why Are Americans Increasingly Staying Home and What Is the Cost?

A new study reveals that Americans are spending more and more time at home, a trend that raises concerns about health and social cohesion. According to Diana Lind, a researcher at the Center for Economy and Society at Johns Hopkins University, Americans spend an average of 99 minutes more at home each day compared to 2003.

Lind points out that this social withdrawal has received less attention compared to the use of social media. She emphasizes that time at home is often lonely and associated with social isolation and lack of exercise.

One solution proposed is the creation of walkable neighborhoods with spaces for social interaction. Unfortunately, such neighborhoods are rare in the US and are often expensive. In addition, the increase in digital businesses is replacing physical contacts, reducing the incentives to leave the house.

Lind suggests strengthening social infrastructure, facilitating the private sector in reviving social life, and building more homes in neighborhoods with social dynamics.

Finally, she emphasizes that going out should be considered a health intervention and not a luxury.
