Former Vice President Kamala Harris has announced she will not run for California governor in 2026, leaving open the possibility of a third run for the White House in 2028.

In a statement, Harris said she spent time reflecting on the nation's state and the best way to continue fighting for the American people and her values. She expressed her love for California but concluded she would not be running for governor.

Harris's decision leaves open questions about her political future after her defeat by Donald Trump in last year's presidential election. She has not ruled out another run for president, after unsuccessful bids in 2020 and 2024.

Harris stated that her leadership and public service would not be in elected office for now, and she looks forward to helping elect Democrats across the nation. Her decision leaves the field wide open to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom.

Democratic strategists, such as Sean Clegg, indicated that Harris is considering various options, including starting a nonprofit to engage younger voters.
