US: New Migrant Detention Center Planned in Florida

The state of Florida has begun construction of a new migrant detention center, referred to as an 'Alligator Alcatraz,' in the Everglades wetlands. This move comes as part of the Trump administration's anti-immigration policies.
The center, located at an abandoned airfield in the Everglades National Park, will have a capacity of at least 1,000 migrants. State Attorney General James Atmeier stated that the 77,000-acre area offers a cost-effective solution for constructing the detention center.
Alex Howard, a former DHS official, commented that transforming the Everglades into a migrant detention center is a 'grotesque mix of inhumanity and political theater.' The Friends of the Everglades organization expressed concerns about the risk posed to the ecosystem.
The center is expected to cost approximately $450 million per year to operate.
