More than 132 million people in the eastern US are facing a heatwave, with increased humidity exacerbating the situation and straining power grids. Excessive heat warnings have been issued in 29 states.

The National Weather Service reports that the severe weather conditions will peak on Sunday and Monday before gradually subsiding. The heat threatens human life and strains electricity and transportation networks.

In New York City, temperatures are expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, while Washington, D.C., is forecast to reach 39 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Utility companies are preparing for increased demand.

In addition to the heat, air quality is affected by smoke from Canadian wildfires, mainly in northern New York and New England.
