A New York appeals court has overturned a fine of approximately half a billion dollars imposed on former U.S. President Donald Trump, deeming it excessive. The fine was initially levied after a judge ruled that Trump fraudulently inflated the value of his properties.

The decision is considered a setback for New York Attorney General Letitia James, who sued Trump for fraud in 2022. The appellate court judges had expressed reservations during the case's review in September 2024.

Trump had appealed the decision by Judge Arthur Engoron, who had ordered him to pay a $454.2 million fine in February 2024. The appeals court suspended the restrictions imposed on Trump and his sons.

Trump called the overturning of the fine a "complete victory." Letitia James announced that she would appeal the decision.
