Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as Mayor of New York City in a ceremony filled with symbolism. The 34-year-old Democrat, the city's first Muslim, South Asian, and African-descent mayor, was sworn in early on New Year's Day before Attorney General Letitia James.

The ceremony took place at a historic subway station in Manhattan. Mamdani was sworn in on the Quran, held by his wife, Rama Dhuwaj. The copy belonged to Arturo Schomburg, a founder of Black History.

Later, an official ceremony followed on the steps of City Hall, with Senator Bernie Sanders as a guest. Mamdani faces challenges such as the cost of living and his campaign promises for affordable housing and free childcare.
