Donald Trump has threatened to cut federal funding to New York City if Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor. In a post, Trump called Mamdani a "lying communist" and stated that the city would not receive a "dime" if he is elected.

Mamdani, a progressive candidate, is leading in the polls after Eric Adams withdrew from the race. His agenda includes rent freezes and free bus transportation.

Trump's threat is reminiscent of efforts to deprive "sanctuary cities" of resources, which have been challenged in court. Mamdani responded that Trump is "going through the stages of grief" and realizing that he will win.

The New York elections will be held on November 4.
