Trump: Immigrant Detention Center “Alcatraz with Alligators” in Florida

The state of Florida has begun construction of a new immigrant detention center, referred to as “Alcatraz with Alligators,” in the Everglades wetlands. This move is part of President Donald Trump's anti-immigration policies.
The center, located on a 77,000-acre site at an abandoned airfield in the Everglades National Park, will have a capacity of at least 1,000 immigrants. State Attorney General James Atmeier stated that the location offers a cost-effective solution for detaining immigrants.
The center is expected to begin operations within “30 to 60 days from the start of construction.” The annual operating cost is estimated at $450 million, with the state considering federal funding, according to Trisha McLaughlin, a representative of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The creation of the center has sparked reactions. Alex Howard, a former DHS official, described the transformation of the Everglades into a detention center as a “grotesque mix of inhumanity and political theater.” The Friends of the Everglades organization expressed concerns about the risk to the ecosystem.
