Expert Advice on Snakes in Cyprus: What to Do If You Encounter One

Herpetologist Yiannis Angelis, speaking to ThemaOnline, advises that if you encounter a snake, you should move away from it and not kill it. He also provides the Facebook page of the Herpetological Center for contact.
According to Mr. Angelis, the viper is the only snake in Cyprus that is dangerous to humans due to its venom. It is recognized by its triangular head and stocky body.
In case of a bite, it is recommended to go to the nearest hospital within 2 to 8 hours, without attempting to suck the venom.
Mr. Angelis emphasizes the need for caution during the afternoon and evening hours, as well as near areas with water. He suggests spraying with repellents, clearing vegetation, cleaning outdoor areas, limiting watering, controlling rodents, and wearing appropriate clothing, especially in the mountains.
It is noted that in the last 30 years there has been no recorded death from a snake bite in Cyprus.
There are eight species of snakes in Cyprus, three of which are venomous, with the viper being the only one that can harm humans.
