Republic of Cyprus: Warning Against Using British Bases as a Launchpad

The Republic of Cyprus, through its Minister of Defense Vassilis Palmas, has warned that the country should not be used as a launchpad for air strikes, referring to the potential involvement of the US and Israel against Iran. Nicosia emphasizes that the use of the bases for such operations puts Cyprus at risk and violates the Treaties of Establishment.

British Minister for Enterprise and Trade Jonathan Reynolds stated that there is no request for the involvement of the bases in military operations, but stressed that Britain will defend its allies if they are threatened. The Cypriot side disputes the right of the British to use the bases for military operations, citing legal opinions and the fact that Britain has not paid rent since 1965.

Cyprus believes that the use of the bases for military purposes would put it at the center of conflicts. It is suggested that if Britain wishes to support the US and Israel, it should launch military operations from its own territory.

The issue of the British bases remains relevant and is considered by the Republic of Cyprus as a colonial legacy. Nicosia seeks decolonization and links the issue to its strategic goals, as well as the decision of the International Court of Justice in The Hague regarding Mauritius.

The Republic of Cyprus warns London that there will be a reaction if military facilities in Cyprus are used for military purposes, which would lead to a rupture.
