Monemvasia: Fire in Karavostasi Under Control

The fire in the Karavostasi area of Monemvasia is now in better condition, according to the Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia, Theodoros Veroutis.

Mr. Veroutis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that the fire is subsiding. During the night, firefighting teams were operating in the area, while at first light, aerial water drops began.

The fire had grown to a large scale, exceeding 2,500 acres, spreading over the settlement of Karavostasi and entering it. The fire forces managed to save the houses, limiting the damage to gardens and agricultural land.

The Deputy Regional Governor of Laconia stated that it was a difficult fire, as Karavostasi has only one road, while the change in wind direction made the situation even more difficult. 72 firefighters with three teams of infantry and 21 vehicles are still operating at the scene, with the assistance of aerial means.
