Chios has been declared in a state of emergency as destructive fires rage for the second day, breaking out almost simultaneously in various parts of the island. The flames have spread to the southern part, threatening the Mastihohoria.

The Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Giannis Kefalogiannis, stated that the possibility of organized criminal activity is being seriously investigated, as the fires broke out in multiple, geographically unconnected locations.

The largest outbreaks are raging around the area of Agios Panteleimon, outside Varvasi, and in Agios Georgios. 190 firefighters, 11 forest commando units, 38 vehicles, 13 helicopters, and 4 Canadair are operating.

The fire that broke out in Leptopoda in the morning has been brought under control, as has the resurgence in Monodendri. Civil Protection, the Municipality, and volunteers are trying to protect homes and properties.

There have been no arrests of suspects, but all possibilities remain open, according to the minister. The battle with the flames continues unabated.
