International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Paphos

An international conference dedicated to the sustainable management of solid waste begins on Wednesday in Paphos. Maria Loizidou, a professor at the National Technical University of Athens and director of the Environmental Science and Technology Laboratory, stated that more than 1000 delegates from 100 countries and 5 continents will participate.
The conference is organized by the National Technical University of Athens and the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. According to Ms. Loizidou, the conference is aimed at researchers, local authorities, and businesses, with the goal of promoting new approaches to waste management.
Ms. Loizidou emphasized that waste management is a global issue that requires improved resource management, including recycling and reuse. New legislation mandates the utilization of waste using various techniques and technologies.
The conference, which was previously held in Cyprus in 2016, is a significant international event. Scientists from around the world will participate to exchange experiences and examine research and practical applications. Ms. Loizidou highlighted the need for sorting waste at home and the responsibility of municipalities for its collection and processing.
She acknowledged that there are infrastructures in Cyprus, but they need upgrading. In particular, Paphos lacks any infrastructure. She reiterated that by 2030, the goal is to bury only 10% of waste and recycle 65%.
The conference begins on June 25th at the Aliathon Hotel at 09:00 and will last three days. Over 600 papers will be presented covering all aspects of waste management.
