Fires in Chios: Battle with Flames on Three Fronts

Fires that broke out yesterday noon in northern Chios are ongoing. 190 firefighters with 38 vehicles are operating on site, and five aerial means (four aircraft and one helicopter) have started operating since morning.

Firefighters and residents fought all night to protect homes from the flames, while strong winds are blowing in the area. Areas from the city of Chios and further north have been without electricity since yesterday noon.

During the night, the fire brigade focused on the south-southwestern part of the fire in Chalkio and Dafnonas, as well as the northern part outside Vrontados, where the flames continue to burn the suburban area.

According to the fire brigade, the fronts are scattered and burn forest and agricultural land. There are no reports of burned houses. The fire has moved from the Vrontados area and is heading towards the leprosarium area in Kofinas, according to statements by the Deputy Mayor of Tourism and Sports, Giorgos Christakis.

The flames extend to three main areas: from Karyes to Kleidou, from Vrontados, Agios Markos and Agios Makarios, and from Korakari, heading towards the city center and southern Chios. In Agios Makarios, the flames reached near houses.

Reinforcements from Thessaloniki and Piraeus arrived on the island, with the MP of Chios, Notis Mitarakis, coordinating the extinguishing operation from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. According to him, 11 helicopters remained in Chios to operate from 06:00 in the morning.
