The Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory warns of a purple jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) outbreak in various regions of Greece. According to a statement, the situation is particularly serious in Northern Evia, which acts as a passage from Pagasitikos to the open sea.

The Pagasitikos Gulf continues to show an increased presence of jellyfish, mainly on its eastern coasts. The outbreak has extended to the Northern Sporades, with confirmed cases in Skiathos and Skopelos.

The Observatory advises swimmers and beach visitors in the aforementioned areas to be especially careful, as the sting of Pelagia noctiluca is intense and can cause skin irritations and other symptoms.

The announcement notes similarities to the purple jellyfish outbreak in the Mediterranean during the period 2020-2023. Currently, Gibraltar is facing the most serious situation, while outbreaks have also been reported in Spain, France, Italy, and the Adriatic.

In case of a sting, it is recommended to immediately remove the tentacles carefully, rinse the area with sea water, and apply ice or cold compresses. In case of severe symptoms, a visit to a hospital or health center is necessary.
