Avtias Asks Commission for Immediate Support for Chios After Fires

New Democracy MEP, Giorgos Avtias, submitted an urgent question to the European Commission, requesting immediate support for Chios, which has been affected by fires.
In his question, G. Avtias states that since the afternoon of Sunday, June 22, 2025, three fires have broken out in Chios and spread due to strong winds. Despite the efforts of the fire brigade, the fires have rekindled, resulting in the evacuation of 17 settlements and the interruption of electricity and access to basic goods in many areas.
G. Avtias asks the European Commission whether the European Solidarity Fund will be activated to compensate those affected, whether it intends to finance the creation of a European fire brigade to assist Mediterranean countries, and whether more resources will be allocated to member states for fire prevention and suppression.
Furthermore, he asks whether those affected will be compensated within 12 weeks, as announced by the responsible Commissioner for Cohesion.
According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the fire services have dealt with 110 fires in Greece in the last 48 hours.
G. Avtias calls for the immediate intervention of the Commission to provide assistance to Chios.
